We all know about serious traumatic brain injuries (TBI). We’ve see news stories about individuals who were involved in serious auto accidents lapse into comas. We’ve heard about people falling from great heights who are left unable to perform basic daily life functions without the help of others.

But you may not be aware of how common brain injuries are. In fact, you might witness a brain injury:

  • on a soccer field in Clark County if two kids bump heads when going for a ball in the air.
  • in a Boulder City supermarket when an elderly man slips in some spilled liquid and falls to the floor, smacking his head on a shelf on the way down.
  • inside a warehouse store in Green Valley, when a stack of boxes falls off of a shelf and onto the head of a customer below.
  • outside a Summerlin department store on Black Friday, when a woman hits her head as she gets pushed to the ground and trampled by an overeager crowd when the store’s doors open for its big pre-Christmas sale.

The most common type of traumatic brain injury is a concussion. While most people fully recover from concussions, a significant number experience long-term effects. And any concussion has the potential to threaten the health of the victim if left untreated.

Some of the most common symptoms of a concussion are:

  • headache
  • memory loss
  • dizziness, confusion, or lightheadedness
  • dilation of pupil(s)
  • blurred vision
  • slurred speech
  • continual nausea or vomiting
  • thinking, attention, or concentration troubles
  • ringing in the ear(s)
  • change in sleep patterns, mood, or behavior

If you think that you or a loved one has suffered a concussion that was someone else’s fault, contact a personal injury attorney as soon as possible.
